Stapled pamphlet, 13 in. x 8 in., pp. 48. Illustrated with line drawings. Tipped in: Eleven "Valentine's" postal cards spread over several pages portraying the scenery of Glendalough. Light blue cardpaper wraps with black title to spine. Inscription, dated 1931, in ink to top of front cover. Gentle rubbing and light age-toning to wraps. Touch of rust to staples. The inscription reads: "Rt. Hon. Saml. Cunningham, P.C. from R.J. Welch." Gift-giver Robert John Welch ( 1859 1936) was an Irish photographer interested in natural history, particularly mollusca. Welch, born in Strabane, County Tyrone, lived for a time in Enniskillen. He was the son of an accomplished Scottish amateur photographer. After the death of his father, Welch established his own business in 1883 in Lonsdale Street in Belfast. Much of his time was spent taking pictures that reflected the life of the people and the contemporary landscape. Recipient Samuel Cunningham PC (1862 1946) was a businessman, stockbroker and politician from Northern Ireland. He was elected to the Senate of the Parliament of Northern Ireland on its formation in 1921 and served until 1945. Glendaloughis home to one of the most important monastic sites in Ireland. Thisearly Christian monastic settlementwas founded bySt. Kevinin the 6th century and from this developed the Monastic City . The City consists of a number of monastic remains, and the most impressive being theRound Towerwhich stands 30m high. Seller Inventory # 87940
