National Museum Message Biblique Marc Chagall

When Marc Chagall broached the subject of the Bible in the seventeen major works which made up the core of the collection in the national museum Message Biblique, he did not intend to proselytise in a religious sense. He wanted the fraternal message implicit in the Old Testament writings to be made visible through pictures and to therefore hold a universal appeal. The museum, opened in 1973, and whose original concept was worked out by the architect Andre Herman together with the artist, is designed with that aim in mind, Visiting it gives also a lesson in painting: how can one keep the meaning of Art?
