The National Portrait Gallery Of Distinguished Americans: With Biographical Sketches, In Four Volumes by James Herring and James Barton Longacre is a biographical reference work that presents engraved portraits and concise lives of notable American figures. Volume IV, the portion represented here, covers a broad cross-section of personalities from the American Revolution and early Republic—statesmen, jurists, military leaders, scientists, and cultural figures. The volume combines portraiture with narrative about each subject’s education, career, public service, and impact on national development, emphasizing patriotism, civic virtue, and contributions to independence, constitutional government, diplomacy, and nation-building. It includes extended entries on John Adams, Abigail Adams, Samuel Adams, and other prominent figures such as Pinckney, Bowditch, Livingston, and Lafayette’s American circle, illustrating the breadth of the nation’s leaders and their legacies. The work aims to memorialize distinguished Americans through a national portrait gallery and biographical sketches, reflecting 19th-century reverence for public virtue and the founding ideals of the United States.
