About this Item

Both volumes in brown and maroon full leather with raised bands and gilt decorations on all aspects. Volume one: vii+616 pages and volume two: iv+662 pages. Some small nicks and scuffs, spines spot-rubbing, 19th-century bookplates, and shelfwear. 72 full-page engravings in volume one and 86 full-page engravings in volume two. Much more interesting than many of the collective biographical / portrait volumes of the period because of the breadth of the individuals included, which has allowed the author and artist to include many important, but often ignored, persons, such as George Peabody, Joel Barlow, Peter Cooper, Elisha Kane, William Prescott, and Roger Taney. The collection of steel engravings is well-executed. Bookseller Inventory # b10109
