[Native American] Archive of four real photo postcards of Natives from the Rapid City Indian Council saddle bronco riding. South Dakota s. Doubleday-Rise. Date unknown, circa 1910s. 5.5" x 3.5" inche One photo shows a cowboy taking a tumble from a white bronco named "Star Gazer." There are two shots of Paul White riding "Scarface" as it bucks around, White losing his cowboy hat in the process. The last photo shows Samuel Belt on "Black Serpent" in mid-air, several feet off the ground, with a crowd of Native cowboy spectators watching behind him. These three photos show the underrepresented Native American cowboys. The group has a long history in the rodeo arena, especially in the Plains regions of South Dakota and Montana. At agricultural fairs on the Crow Indian Reservation and elsewhere, rodeos were prominent features of annual gatherings. The Crows took great pride in their skills and accomplishments as bronco riders. At Rosebud and other reservations in the Dakotas, Lakota Sioux cowboys also demonstrated their talents in various rodeos. The dark-skinned men, likely of the Lakota Sioux tribe, pictured in these photos are incredibly talented rodeo riders. Some paper remnants on the verso from where the real photo postcards were pasted into a photo album. In very good condition.
