Native Americans: Opposing Viewpoints

An anthology of essays explores such issues as war by colonists, federal policy, relocation to reservations, distribution of tribal land, and contemporary reparations

Gr. 9^-12. Part of the Opposing Viewpoints American History series, this is a sophisticated, academic essay collection that draws on a variety of Native American and nonIndian sources, past and present, to debate the history of European-Indian relations, from early encounters to today. Historians and politicians look at such issues as removal and resistance, assimilation and separation, from many points of view. Useful introductions to each general section and to each individual essay summarize the questions raised, and there are also further discussion guidelines, a chronology, and a long annotated bibliography. This is for advanced history students who know the background and want to research beyond myths of frontier adventure and civilization. Hazel Rochman
