About the Author
Roger K. Khouri, MD, FACS is a board certified plastic surgeon trained in general surgery at the University of North Carolina, in plastic surgery at Brown University, in reconstructive microsurgery at New York University, and in hand surgery at Harvard. Dr. Khouri is a scholar in plastic surgery with over 100 peer-reviewed scientific publications. He was Professor of Plastic Surgery at Washington University School of Medicine before moving to Miami. Dr. Khouri is the founder of the Miami Breast Center. He has more than 25 years of experience with breast reconstruction and was a pioneer in reconstructive microsurgery before becoming a pioneer in fat transfer to the breast. He also invented the BRAVA external expander which led him to develop the breakthrough third-option breast reconstruction (regeneration) procedure called BRAVA + AFT (Autologous Fat Transfer). In 1997 Dr. Khouri published an article in the Annals of Surgery, the most prestigious scientific surgery journal. This article described what was then the largest experience in the world with breast reconstruction using microsurgery (DIEP) and TRAM flaps. Over the past decade, always on the lookout for something better, he perfected BRAVA + AFT, an improved and more patient-friendly alternative method of breast reconstruction. Along the way, he contributed to many innovations in liposuction and lipografting, and he became a recognized innovator and expert in natural, no implant breast augmentation and post-mastectomy breast reconstruction. For his expertise and his pioneering work on the regenerative abilities of fat grafts and BRAVA in breast reconstruction and augmentation, Dr. Khouri has been invited to lecture all over the world. He has taught at more than 200 national and international plastic surgery society meetings in more than 35 countries. For his contribution to breast reconstruction with BRAVA + AFT, he won the Best Scientific Work Award at the prestigious European Association of Plastic Surgeons(EURAPS). He was also invited to present his series of immediate post-mastectomy breast reconstruction with BRAVA + AFT at the prestigious American Association of Plastic Surgeons (AAPS) Annual Meeting. In Miami, Dr. Khouri has personally trained more than 500 surgeons from 40 countries on his breakthrough procedures. Thomas M. Biggs, MD, FACS is an experienced and highly-recognized plastic surgeon from Houston, Texas. He s a clinical professor of plastic surgery at Baylor College of Medicine in the Texas Medical Center in Houston. Board-certified in plastic surgery,he s the author of over 50 peer-reviewed articles and numerous book chapters and is currently the editor-inchief of the Journal of the International Society of Plastic,Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery. He is former editor-inchief of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. From 2002 to 2004 he served as president of the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. Dr. Biggs is married to Dr. Katherine Schutzmann, a board-certified and active emergency medicine physician. In addition to operating-room surgery, Dr. Biggs s passion has been education, having trained over 145 residents in what is now the Methodist Hospital Residency Program. The passion for education has taken him to the major cities of the United States plus 57 foreign countries, lecturing and teaching plastic surgeons from all over the world. In many of these countries he has performed training surgeries which were televised to large audiences of plastic surgeons. Dr. Biggs believes this book is the latest chapter in the never-ending journey to help make people s lives better.
