The July 1993 symposium provided an opportunity to review and discuss new developments in both direct and indirect gas conversion processes. Oxidative coupling of methane as a route to higher value fuels or feedstock was a major part of the program. The advances in understanding of reaction mechanisms and catalyst structure are discussed in a plenary paper and in many of the contributed papers. Fischer-Tropsch chemistry receives considerable attention, with commercialization of Shell's SMDS process in Malaysia being described. Other topics covered include advances in methanol synthesis and conversion synthesis gas production from methane, homogeneous metal catalyzed methane conversion, methane as a reductant in NOx removal, and fuel cells for methane conversion. Review: ...should be recommended to everybody who works on the direct and indirect utilization of natural gas; it provides much useful information and the presented papers contain the most current advances in this field. Everybody dealing with C1 chemistry will have an interest in this book. -- Applied Catalysis A
