Natural Hazards and Disaster Risks Reduction, 2nd Edition

This reprint contains a collection of studies addressing the occurrence and impacts of natural hazards arising from the complex interactions that regulate Earth's environmental systems. Although these phenomena originate from natural processes, their intensity and spatial distribution are strongly influenced by the combination of endogenous and exogenous factors acting at global, regional, and local scales. Climate variability and human pressures can further intensify these dynamics, amplifying their effects across different spatial and temporal dimensions. When such events affect inhabited areas, they can generate diverse risk scenarios involving communities, infrastructures, and economic activities. The degree of safety largely depends on the level of exposure to hazards and on the preparedness of societies, which is shaped by awareness, perception, and effective planning strategies. In this context, the protection and sustainable management of territories play a crucial role in reducing vulnerability and supporting long-term sustainable development.
