3 small volumes, published in 1826 and 1827, bound in full marbled calf, front boards embossed with a design for the Society For Promoting Christian Knowledge, spines banded in gilt with gilt titles on red leather inserts, gilt banding on front edges of boards.
In very good condition, remarkably so given that they were printed 200 years ago - edges lightly rubbed and owner?s inscriptions, some very slight minor scattered foxing but otherwise very bright, tight and clean.
The Natural History Of Animals, dated April 1826, comprises 164pp, including a preface, describing 21 fishes, with 4 illustrated by full page black and white etchings.
The Natural History of Remarkable Trees, Shrubs And Plants, dated May 1827, comprises xviiipp, including a comprehensive Introduction, then 179pp describing 61 plants etc, with 7 illustrated by black and white full page etchings as well as 4 smaller images ? including, randomly, a sheep and a bird! The gilt banding on the front edges of this volume is worn.
The Natural History Of Remarkable Insects, dated July 1827, comprises 177pp describing 33 insects, together with a Preface, Introductory Remarks and comments on both The Beauty Of Insects and Cruelty to Insects, illustrated with 6 black and white full page etchings ? the bird also pops up again a couple of times.
