About this Item
A foundational classic of dental science, this is the third edition (1803) of John Hunterâ s monumental Natural History of the Human Teeth â " the first scientific study of human dentition, originally published in 1771 and 1778 in two parts. Hunter (1728â "1793), one of the most influential surgeons and anatomists of the 18th century, established the principles of dental anatomy, pathology, and surgical treatment through careful dissection and clinical observation. This combined 1803 edition unites both of Hunterâ s treatises â " the Natural History and the Practical Treatise on the Diseases of the Teeth â " into one volume, illustrated with finely engraved copper plates depicting detailed anatomical structures of the jaw, enamel, nerves, and developing teeth. The plates, executed after Hunterâ s own specimens and drawings by artists such as Jan van Rymsdyk, and engraved by Robert Strange and others, remain among the most precise and beautiful early anatomical renderings in the history of dentistry. The text systematically describes the structure and growth of the teeth, their diseases, and methods of treatment â " including extraction, transplantation, and oral surgery â " forming the foundation of modern dental medicine. An indispensable work in both the history of dentistry and medical illustration. Condition & Binding:ÂBound in original paper-covered boards with black cloth backstrip, now completely detached from the text block. The boards are worn, rubbed, and separating, with losses at edges and spine; the sewing is partially loose though gatherings remain complete. Internally, the text and plates are clean and complete, with wide margins, light age toning, and scattered foxing, but the copper engravings remain sharp and well-impressed. Some minor chipping along the edges of a few leaves, consistent with age. Overall- poor.
