Synopsis

This book is a comprehensive (to date of publication) evaluation of the evidence regarding alternative medicine treatments. Bottom line: basically, alternative treatments do not work. The few supplements and herbs said to be effective at the time of the book's publication have, almost without exception, subsequently been found ineffective.

About the Author

I practiced alternative medicine in the 1990s but gradually recognized that the field was intellectually bankrupt and that I should abandon it. This was a difficult recognition because my practice was very successful. I wrote two partially supportive alternative medicine that I now reject, and also a dozen or more books on evidence-based evaluation of alternative medicine and evidence-based medicine generally that I still endorse. After accidentally inventing the word "orthorexia nervosa" in 1997,  I went on to write and publish science fiction short stories, a comic novel on alternative medicine, a hard-science science fiction novel on immortality, and two rather challenging biology-based popular science books that are highly regarded by experts in their fields. A third popular science book is on its way on the origins of animal communication and human language.
