1835. Three quarters leather over marble cloth covered boards, small octavo, 246 pp., beautifully illustrated with 36 color plates. Minor edge-wear to boards and spine. Condition: Very Good. Hardcover book, first edition. Colour title page vignette, 246 pages of text followed by 34 hand-coloured plates. A Very Good copy. Bound in the original fawn cloth binding with Naturalist's library badge and title to spine. The covers are rubbed and dull but the contents are clean and bright with only a very odd foxing spot. Binding slightly stretched at centre. Green endpapers. Each plate has the original tissue guard in place. Modern butterfly bookplate of the previous owner inside cover with previous owners surname above. portrait frontis of Werner. Pictures available. Seller Inventory # 39412

Decorative Cloth. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. A very good copy of the 1st edition of British Butterflies, vol III of Entomology from the Naturalist's Library edited by Sir William Jardine. In the original publisher's cloth binding with gilt titles to the spine, with 34 plates of which 32 are hand coloured. With volume listing for the Naturalist's Library; notice from the publisher; half title; frontispiece portrait of Werner; hand coloured vignette title page; 2 further title pages; advertisement; contents listing; Memoir of Werner; text with illustrations, 2 plain plates and 32 hand coloured plates - tissue-guarded; and publishers adverts (20 pages) at the rear. The binding has been rebacked preserving the original spine which was complete but had a central split. The binding is sound and tight. The front board is faded at the edges with some turning to corners and light edge wear. The back board is more faded and with a lot of surface scuffing and some repair to corners. The original green endpapers are present with professional repair at the joints. The contents are complete and clean. Most of the text pages have been opened only recently and are very clean with toning to the paper at the edges. The plates are bright and very well coloured with some offsetting to the tissue guards. Condition: Very Good. In Sir William Jardine's Naturalist's Library. Bound in half dark green calfand marbled boards. Attractive decorative gilt spine with red title label: The History of the British Butterfly. Boards are rubbed and edges are bumped. Binding is tight. Pages are age tanned with very occasional spotting, gilt page edges. Engraving of A G Werner to frontispiece with tissue guard and a memoir. Thirty six plates of which thirty four are hand coloured, drawn from the life. 16mo, 246pp. This is a beautiful early book of British Diurnal Lepidoptera, with superb plates in fine condition.
