"Trees Worth Knowing" is organized into eight parts covering North American trees (both native and introduced), illustrated with 48 plates (16 in color):
1. The Life of the Trees ? Botany fundamentals: chemistry of trees, food, growth, annual rings, bark, leaves, sap, and how to identify trees in winter.
2. The Nut Trees ? Walnuts, hickories, beech, chestnuts, oaks, horse-chestnuts, and lindens.
3. Water-loving Trees ? Poplars, willows, hornbeams, birches, alders, sycamores, sweet/sour gum, and Osage orange.
4. Trees with Showy Flowers and Fruits ? Magnolias, dogwoods, viburnums, mountain ashes, rhododendrons, mountain laurel, madroņa, witch hazel, sumachs, hollies, and others.
5. Fruit Trees ? Apples, plums, cherries, hawthorns, service-berries, hackberries, mulberries, figs, papaws, pond apples, and persimmons.
6. The Pod-bearing Trees ? Locusts, acacias, mesquite, and related species.
7. Deciduous Trees with Winged Seeds ? Maples, ashes, and elms.
8. The Cone-bearing Evergreens ? Pines, spruces, firs, hemlocks, cedars, arbor-vitaes, larches, and sequoias.
Each species entry covers identification features (leaf shape, bark, buds, flowers, fruit), range, and often uses or cultural notes. The tone is accessible and aimed at nature enthusiasts and students, with an emphasis on field identification.
This copy is a 1930 edition issued by Wm. H. Wise & Co., with the copyright retained by Doubleday, Page & Company. It's a standard arrangement in the book trade where one firm (Wise) issues/distributes a title under another firm's (Doubleday's) copyright. The "Country Life Press" imprint simply confirms it was printed at Doubleday's own Garden City facility. The book is in excellent condition, although the dust jacket is a little worn - see photos.
