Why do parents have difficulty communicating with their teenagers today? What prevents parents from gaining the deep trust and respect needed to fully prepare their children for life? Why, even in families who prepare successful children in life, are there many who are left with issues still unresolved? Nature s Parenting Process: 5 Simple Truths to Empower Our Children seeks to delete this confusion in child rearing by refocusing parenting on 5 simple truths, with the promise that such a commitment will transform both our parenting effectiveness and our families. Nature s Parenting Process is based on the nationally recognized Hyde Schools parent and family program, a network serving over 2500 public and private school families, plus Biggest JobTM workshops that serve parents and communities nationally. The basic point of Nature s Parenting Process contends that presently no clear philosophy regarding parenting exists, so there is confusion in our society, given democratic, personal and love relationships with the very unique parent-child relationship. The 5 Simple Truths to Empower Our Children can help reestablish this special relationship: 1. Parent with Humility. Nature is the most powerful force in child rearing; as parents understand their role in relation to nature, they empower their leadership of children. 2. Parent Beyond Love. Children seek the love of their caregivers from birth for their survival; parents must focus on preparing their children for life to maintain that powerful bond. 3. Parent with Principles. Our principles rather than our personalities keep the focus on our children s preparation for life; our principles rather than our rules help make our children and not us responsible for what is right and wrong. 4. Take Hold as We Let Go. We must gradually let go of 51% of the responsibility of our children s lives to them by the end of their adolescence; we do this effectively by first determining and then taking hold of our own responsibilities. 5. Parent by Example. Children imitate us from birth. We are unaware of how profoundly we influence children. They read our hearts, so they often know our ultimate intentions better than we do. So truth is paramount in dealing with our children. All the work we do with these 5 simple truths will have real meaning to our children, which will encourage us to continue to internalize them in our parenting.
About the Author
Joseph Gauld founded the Hyde School in Bath, ME in 1966 to explore the premise every individual is gifted with a unique potential that defines a destiny which he sought to support with a curriculum devoted to the development of character courage, integrity, concern, curiosity and leadership. By 1974, Joe realized this new concept required the involvement of parents. So he began a regular program to address parental growth and family issues. Joe has worked with thousands of parents and families in developing the unique Hyde parent/family program, which has been featured on CBS 60 Minutes, ABC 20-20 and NBC Today. Today there are six public and private Hyde Schools, another boarding school in Woodstock, CT, a public high school in New Haven, CT, and K-12 Charter Schools in Bronx and Brooklyn, NYC and Washington, DC, plus other public schools utilizing the Hyde concept. Joe graduated from Bowdoin College and has a master s degree in mathematics from Boston University. He wrote the column The Courage to Grow, and two books: Character First (ICS Press) and Hyde: Preparation for Life (Hyde Foundation Press.)
