Styled the fifth edition, but actually the third (following editions of 1802 and 1804), this 1806 the first edition to include woodcut maps of the Mississippi for which the work is most famous. The 1806 is also the first obtainable edition, as the earlier ones are known in but a few copies each. This vitally important work in helping to develop the commerce of the early United States, containing woodcut maps of the length of the aforementioned rivers as well as an early plan of Pittsburgh.
