Gr 5-7--Two books that describe the lives of two modern-day, risk-taking adventurers. These astronauts planned, studied, and applied themselves, working hard to achieve their goals. Each book opens with the moment of glory and then proceeds with a chronological presentation that details family, schooling, training, married life, and life after the astronaut program. There is perhaps more information than average students need or want to know, such as the spouses, homes, and occupations of Armstrong's married siblings; however, much of the detail, especially of astronaut training and flight, is fascinating and enlightening. While emphasizing the many positive aspects of these two people, the authors also give information on some of their human frailties, such as their divorces and Armstrong's commercial ventures. The text is clear and readable. One or two black-and-white photos of fair quality accompany each chapter. Both subjects are worthwhile role models about whom quality, up-to-date material is welcome.
