Nerves and the Man : a Popular Psychological and Constructive Study of Nervous Breakdown

Nerves And The Man : A Popular Psychological And Constructive Study Of Nervous Breakdown by W. Charles Loosmore explores the causes, nature, and cures of nervous breakdown in a style accessible to lay readers. The author presents a thorough overview of the nervous system, defines neurasthenia, and surveys factors such as heredity, education, fatigue, and social strain that contribute to nervous exhaustion. The book combines theory with practical guidance, emphasizing that restoration rests on hopeful outlook, regular rest, sleep, and the gentle regulation of emotions. It offers concrete strategies: energy conservation, fatigue management, controlled speech and activity, and disciplined thinking; exercises in attention, concentration, and will; and techniques such as deep breathing, relaxation, self-suggestion, and deliberate self-education. Nature, daily life, holidays, and meaningful work are framed as essential allies in rebuilding nerve strength. Across chapters on sleep, rest, and mental discipline, Loosmore advocates a balanced program of healthful living, self-control, and purposeful living to help sufferers reclaim health and vitality.
