The 7th volume of an enormous conchological work started by Friedrich Heinrich Wilhelm Martini (vols. 1-3) and continued by Johann Hieronymus Chemnitz (1730-1800), a German scientist and clergyman. This volume features a complete set of 33 plates (numbered 37-69) with coloured engravings of mollusc shells. There are four additional copper engravings of shells in the text. The title page is decorated with a vignette; another two pages are decorated with a large copper engraving: a coat of arms of the counts of Podewils and a portrait of Lorenz Spengler, surrounded with putti. A complete and well-preserved copy. /// Leather binding with raised bands, gilt ornament and marbled edges and endpapers; hardback, [16]+356 pp., 33 plates, 4° (24 x 28.5 cm), leather worn and rubbed, with bookworm traces, backstrip has small crack/tear, corners bumped and rubbed, top edge has small ink stain, endpapers have a few small bookworm traces, spine cracked (but text block is still quite tight), call number or ownership stamp was cut out from title leaf (skilfully pasted over with pieces of paper), some pages yellowed and/or foxed, some plates slightly yellowed, some plates have small traces of dust, ca. 40 pages have small pencil marginalia (usually just two numbers), one page has number written with pen, other signs of wear and age are very rare (folded corner, small traces of dust etc.), condition: good Book Language/s: German.
