The Commodore 64 version of the 1988 video game loosely based on William Gibson s Neuromancer, created in part by Timothy Leary. The game is set in Chiba, Japan in 2058, within both the fictionalized "real world" and a beautifully realized cyberspace. The player character, a cyberpunk, travels between the two, seeking to solve the mystery of the disappearance of their friends. The present version features the soundtrack by Devo. The first explicitly cyberpunk video game, a genre which has continued to influence the medium since. From the legendary Final Fantasy VII to Cyberpunk 2077, a vision of a technological dystopian future has been of persistent interest to game producers.
