Nevada and California Processes of Silver and Gold Extraction

Nevada And California Processes Of Silver And Gold Extraction by Guido Küstel. This book is a practical, 19th-century metallurgy guide aimed at miners and mill operators in Nevada and California. It compiles detailed, step-by-step methods for extracting silver and gold from various ore types, including both dry (fire) and wet processes. The work covers ore classification, blowpipe analysis, wet amalgamation in barrels, pans (Wheeler’s and Hepburn’s designs), and patio heap approaches, as well as roasting and chloridizing roasting to convert silver and enable extraction. It discusses the use of lead cupellation to separate silver from lead, Pattinson’s crystallization to concentrate silver, and augments with Augustin’s and Ziervogel’s chemical leaching techniques. The manual also outlines bullion refining, silver and gold assays, and the construction and operation of necessary equipment such as cupels, furnaces, and retorts. Rich with historical context, the text reflects the era’s mining technology and provides practical guidance and cautions on roasting losses, chemical usage, and process selection.
