In a contemporary full calf binding with gilt tooling, endpapers renewed. Fourteenth edition. First published in 1771, his road book became the leading British coaching itinerary of its period. Illustrated with a large folding map frontispiece. Collated, complete. Daniel Paterson (1738 1825) was a British Army officer, military cartographer and long-serving assistant to the Quartermaster-General. The volume provides direct roads from London and principal cross-country routes throughout England and Wales, together with selected Scottish roads. Entries supply heights of mountains and surveying stations supplied by Lieutenant-Colonel William Mudge, county populations and parliamentary representation, Postal rates and mail-coach arrival and departure times, among other detailed appparatus. In a contemporary full calf binding, endpapers renewed.Externally, smart. Very slight rubbing and bumping to extremities, resulting in very minor loss to calf, more so to corners. Creasing to spine and spine label. Very small split to tail of spine. LIght rubbing to boards, slightly more so to rear. 2 inches of cracking to upper rear joint repaired. Small pale mark to front joint. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright and clean with the odd light spot to first and last few leaves. One or two minor handling marks to the odd leaf. Folding map frontispiece folded incorrectly resulting in pronounced creasing and a substantial tear extending from the point of extension. Very Good.
