Synopsis
Book by Papadakis, Andreas
Reviews
Enhanced by some 240 mostly color illustrations, this ambitious survey of contemporary art is notably illuminating. Papadakis, editor of London-based Art & Design , here culls 34 "critical writings, interviews and artists' statements" from the magazine as well as from exhibition catalogues. Critics and artists discuss the rapid tempo of mass media and its impact on 20th-century art, offer opinions on the effectiveness of political art and expound on the international art scene. Joseph Beuys's influence on current trends is acknowledged. Among the interviewees are Jenny Holzer, known for her installations of electronic signboards; Jeff Koons, who employs consumer-oriented imagery, and Cindy Sherman, whose Untitled Film Stills are subject to feminist criticism. Reproductions of works by Ashley Bickerton, Anselm Kiefer, Barbara Kruger and Mario Merz effectively supplement the rhetoric.

This anthology of interviews, artists' statements, and essays inspired by the journal Art & Design does to some degree document current art, but it also has the unintentional result of cataloging what amounts to an establishment avant-garde, reflecting only those artists who've managed to capture the attention of the major art magazines. Despite its all-encompassing title, the book addresses only U.S. and European art since Beuys and Warhol, with the emphasis falling mainly on the work and words of male artists. Notable exceptions are Jenny Holzer, Barbara Kruger, and Cindy Sherman, yet somehow there seem to be few surprising, risky, or refreshing inclusions among the artists profiled. Beautiful reproductions, particularly those of German painter Anselm Kiefer's work, make up for some of the more annoying passages of art-talk in the book--perhaps the most memorable being the embarrassing self-flattery of Jeff Koons, who makes his grand entrance halfway through. Recommended for large art collections only.
