Although Keough lacks the loving voice heard in Sheila Kitzinger's popular books on pregnancy, birth, and baby care, she still provides a sunny, accessible overview of everything from a woman's experiences during pregnancy to the developmental changes that signal the onset of a child's "Terrible Twos." She includes one chapter especially for working mothers that considers such timely topics as dependent care accounts, and another chapter that very usefully identifies common illnesses. She touches on a number of unusual matters, such as ways to introduce a new baby to a household pet. Illustrations are disappointingly few, but boxed insets, lists, and excerpts from letters written by moms and moms-to-be help open up the print-dominated format; she groups more encouraging letters in a special section near the end. A useful addition whose Better Homes and Gardens imprimatur will mean a lot to prospective readers. Stephanie Zvirin
