In that time the population grew from 2200 to about 65,000 and the small borough had become an important provincial city. This growth was matched by equally dramatic expansion of business and industry, agriculture, tourism, the milling of the vast exotic pine plantations. On the other hand Rotorua also felt the impact of the two world wars and the Great Depression.
