Sea chart. Uncolored copper plate engraving. Image measures 23 1/8" x 34". Stunning chart of the Java Sea including part of Sumatra, Java, Bali and the southern coast Borneo. Includes rhumb lines, depths and shoals, the paths of previous explorations, a compass rose and an inset, "The East Side of Isle Lubeck, with the Osterly Shoals". The coast lines are further illustrated with ten topographical cross sections. A note taken from "New York's Commercial Advertiser, June 15, 1799" based on the logbook of the lost Ontario, describes sailing hazards. Published in "The East-India Pilot, or Oriental Navigator, on One Hundred and Eighteen Plates: Containing a Complete Collection of Charts and Plans, &c." (plate 38). Maps are based on the 1745 French "Neptune Oriental" by Jean Baptiste Nicolas Denis d'Apres de Mannevillette. The later English editions include various additions. With its beautiful and unusual visual approach, this incredibly scarce sea chart is rarely available for sale. Minor overall toning and offsetting. Tear to lower right corner. Full original margins.
