The volume is a 19th?century educational reader edited for use in board schools and home instruction. It presents two parallel series, one for boys and another for girls, with the Girls' Second Standard included in this edition. It aims to combine instruction in reading with practical knowledge to prepare children for daily life, farming and home management, and basic science. The book begins with editors’ prefaces and notices to teachers, outlining core principles: concise yet comprehensive lessons that impart useful knowledge, avoid technicalities, and mix moral instruction with everyday skills. Contents include short narratives, dialogues, poems, and essays on topics such as Baby care, The Lion, The Furniture of a House, Food, Water, Salt, The Potato, Sponges, and many more, along with sections on geography, astronomy, and natural history. Moral themes of honesty, obedience, industry, kindness, and tidiness are woven throughout. The work seeks to cultivate reading, curiosity, virtue, and practical competence in young readers.
