A New and Complete System of Arithmetick : Composed for the Use of the Citizens of the United States

A New And Complete System Of Arithmetick : Composed For The Use Of The Citizens Of The United States by Nicolas Pike. This early 19th?century arithmetic manual presents a comprehensive course of study for U.S. learners, combining rule-based instruction with numerous practical applications. The text covers fundamental notions of notation and numeration, then guides the reader through simple and compound operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, with extensive exemplars and tables. A distinctive feature is its integration of Federal (U.S.) currency, weights, measures, and monetary calculations, including the Federal Money system, reductions between denominations, and decimal representations. The book also introduces more advanced topics such as reduction, vulgar fractions, decimals, and proportion, and evolves into arithmetic theory with Alligation, Permutations and Combinations, Logarithms, and powers and roots, accompanied by worked examples and tables. Edited under the direction of the author and Nathaniel Lord, it reflects the educational aims of early American pedagogy and merchant training, with problems drawn from trade and daily bookkeeping, and printed in Boston in 1809 for Thomas and Andrews.
