"Most immigrants are Roman Catholics and Jews," said an American resident. Then he added, "All Polish folk are Catholics," irrespective of the fact that a number of the Poles in Changeville are Jewish and Lutheran. On the other hand, all Russians were classified as Jewish, although many of them belong to the Greek Orthodox Church. Again, there was a general tendency among native Americans to classify all immigrants as foreigners whether they had become citizens or not. They were considered to be of one and the same class, in spite of the fact that some of them had much more in common with Americans than with other immigrants.' (p. 37) -- `In the face of this situation it is even more unlikely that any significant cooperation will develop among Protestants, Catholics, Jews, and Greek Orthodox. It would, therefore, appear that if Changeville is to become in the future a more integrated and united community, it will be because of the efforts of secular rather than of religious interests.'
