About this title

Synopsis

The New And Enlarged Hymn Book, For The Use Of The Primitive Methodists, Compiled By J. Flesher is a substantial 19th-century hymnal compiled for Primitive Methodist worship by John Flesher. It is a large collection of hymns and devotional poems organized into thematically arranged blocks intended for congregational worship, revival meetings, Sabbath observance, and family devotion. The work emphasizes central evangelical motifs: the person and work of Christ, the renewing power of the Holy Spirit, salvation by grace, justification and sanctification, and perseverance in faith, alongside hopeful eschatology of resurrection, heaven, and eternal life. It features sections on church fellowship, public worship, youth education, camp meetings, charitable works, and seasons of repentance, with maritime imagery and doxologies interwoven throughout. Editorial notes and an extensive index reflect mid-19th-century editorial practices and the denomination’s identity. The hymns aim to nurture faith, courage, charity, and praise across diverse worship and devotional occasions for both congregations and households.
