About the Authors

Kate Douglas is a Professor in English at Flinders University, Australia. She is the author of Contesting Childhood: Autobiography, Trauma and Memory (2010) and the co-author of Life Narratives and Youth Culture: Representation, Agency and Participation (2016; with Anna Poletti). Her edited collections include (with Ashley Barnwell) Research Methodologies for Auto/Biography Studies (2019). Kate is the Head of the Steering committee for the International Auto/Biography Association's Asia-Pacific chapter.

Sonya Huber is Professor of English at Fairfield University, USA. She has written for The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Atlantic, O: The Oprah Magazine, and many other outlets and is the author of eight books, including Love & Industry (2023) and Supremely Tiny Acts: A Memoir of a Day (2021).

David Walker was born in or near Wilmington, North Carolina, the son of a slave father and a free black mother (thus, under the laws of slavery, he was born free). the year of his birth is uncertain, although the most convincing recent research contends that it was 1796 or 1797. By his own account in the Appeal, Walker left Wilmington as a young man and wandered around the United States, residing for an unspecified period in Charleston, South Carolina. In 1825, he turned up as a used-clothes dealer in Boston, where he would spend the rest of his abbreviated life. He died suddenly in 1830.

Amanda Norman is Senior Lecturer and Programme Lead of the BA (Hons) Childhood Studies at the University of Winchester, UK. She is the author of From Conception to Two: Development, Policy and Practice (2019) and has published works about infant care pedagogies in academic peer reviewed and professional practice articles.

Dr Jo Parnell, is Conjoint Fellow in the School of Humanities and Social Science at Newcastle University, Australia.
