Imperial quarto. Engraved title, index leaf, fifty-eight handcolored engraved maps, and two handcolored engraved comparative charts of mountains and rivers. Original red half leather over marbled boards, with a green engraved title label on the front cover. Modest wear to the spine ends and corners, front hinge broken, but rear hinge intact, so that spine of book block is visible when atlas is opened (could be easily reglued), and a couple of signatures are sprung but still attached. The maps are in beautiful condition and the original color is bright. Some minor foxing almost entirely in the margins of the maps. This is the second edition of Finley's Atlas, which was first published in 1824. It is an important atlas from one of the greatest map publishers in America at that time. About half of the maps relate to the American continent, with the majority of the others relating to Europe and Asia. References include Phillips Atlases 4314 (a different edition), Ristow, page 268, Rumsey, page 109 (a different edition). Scarce atlas.
