The New Gradatim : A Revision, With Many Additions And Omissions, Of "Gradatim", An Easy Latin Translation Book For Beginners by H. R. Heatley; H. N. Kingdon. This late-19th-century Latin primer revision is designed to accompany a first-year Latin course, offering a compact, idiomatic introduction to Latin grammar through structured lessons, translations, and abundant practice. The book presents a progressive sequence of topics—Pronunciation, Declension, Conjugation, and essential grammar points such as Subject and Predicate, Adjectives, Apposition, and the Relative—interwoven with worked examples and brief explanations. Central to its pedagogy are the Anecdotes for Translation: short Latin stories (e.g., The Naughty Boy, The Miser, The Pied Piper, The Argonauts, Ulysses) followed by guidance on translating and reinforcing vocabulary via an extensive Vocabulary section. Aimed at building both grammar facility and expressive reading, the work also includes notes, admonitions to cultivate lexical recall, and supplementary glossaries, making it a practical bridge from beginner forms to real Latin reading and translation.
