The New Message in the Teaching of Jesus

The New Message In The Teaching Of Jesus by Philipp Bachmann. In this 1907 theological study Bachmann investigates what constitutes the new in Jesus' teaching and how it stands in relation to Judaism, the scribes, and the prophets. The book argues that the core of Jesus' message is the kingdom of God present and active now, breaking with earlier traditions by grounding religious life in an inward, personal relationship with God and in the transformation of humanity. Bachmann surveys debates among earlier scholars and theologians, weighing whether Jesus introduced a wholly original doctrine or renewed existing prophetic ideas. He concludes that the essence of the new message lies in the proclamation that God has arisen to transform the world into a kingdom of salvation through Jesus of Nazareth, a message calling for repentance and faith in the gospel. The work combines historical-critical analysis with confessional reflection on the meaning of Jesus' life and mission for the Christian understanding of God, humanity, and salvation.
