Maria Rundell's hugely successful recipe book, an illustrated edition of this immensely popular work, from the library of Penguin cookery editor, Jill Norman. 'A New System of Domestic Cookery' was the most popular cookery book of the first half of the nineteenth century, going over sixty-seven editions, and expanding almost double in lengths from revisions in later editions.Illustrated with an engraved title, and nine plates. Collated, complete.First published in 1806, the work was applauded for its economic responsibility and cultural adaptability. The author also shows her opinion that housewives should have all of the mechanics needed to run a proper household, such as education and independence.Notable entries including possibly the first recipe for tomato sauce, and the first recipe in print for Scotch eggs.Written by Maria Eliza Rundell, who was best known for this work. She is sometimes considered to be the original domestic goddess. She begun collecting her recipes, household tips, and herbal remedies, to send to her daughters once they got married. She sent this same collection to a family friend, who happened to be the publisher John Murray.From the library of Jill Norman, an editor and food writer, with her bookplate to the recto of the front endpaper. Norman began working at Penguin in the early 1960s and, as the only woman, the care of the company's cookery books fell to her. It was her responsibility to expand the cookery titles Penguin produced, and thus began to publish works by Jane Grigson, Claudia Roden, and Alan Davidson. In particular Norman worked closely with the famed cookery writer Elizabeth David, with whom she was good friends.Six pages of adverts to the rear. In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally, generally smart. Spine is faded. Light rubbing to the boards and spine. Minor bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. Hinges are starting but firm. Prior owner's pencil inscription and a bookplate to the recto of the front endpaper, and an ink inscription to the recto of the front blank. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright with scattered spots. Good.
