Review
Alasdair Maclean
The first High Technology Small Firms conference was held in 1993, and the papers presented there were assembled as the first publication in this series. The conferences have continued to be held annually, and this publication is the seventh volume in the series. As the editors point out, this is akin to a good refereed journal with its own prestigious status. ... a challenging piece by Stan Metcalfe titled 'Restless capitalism, experimental economics'. This is the best single item in the book; a wide ranging view of questions of economic growth and structural change, examining the role of small firm creation and development in general...and new-technology based firms in particular. ...The first of the contributions relating to finance was a review of the UK tax system by Michaleas, Chittenden and Poutziouris. This was a gem - an excellent insight into the impact of taxation on technology-based small firms.
