Paperback. New Testament I and II represents Vol. I/15 and I/16 in the Works of Saint Augustine: A Translation for the 21st Century. The present volume contains the translations of four works, all of which are exegetical treatises of one sort or another: The Lord's Sermon on the Mount, Agreement among the Evangelists, Questions on the Gospels and Seventeen Questions on Matthew. Each of the four works are accompanied by its own introduction, general index, and scripture index. The Lord's Sermon on the Mount (translated by Michael Campbell, OSA) is an exegesis of chapters five through seven of Matthew's Gospel, but Augustine's explanation of the Sermon is more a charter of Christian morality and spirituality than mere exegesis of the text and brings a unity to the lengthy discourse that goes far beyond an account of what the text says. Augustine wrote Agreement among the Evangelists in 400, contemporaneously with the composition of his Confessions (397 - 401).The treatise, translated by Kim Paffenroth, is an attempt to defend the veracity of the four evangelists in the face of seeming incompatibilities in their record of the gospel events, especially against some pagan philosophers who raised objections to the gospel narratives based on alleged inconsistencies.Questions on the Gospels and Seventeen Questions on Matthew are translated by Roland Teske, SJ. Questions on the Gospels is a record of questions that arose when Augustine was reading the Gospels of Matthew and Luke with a disciple. The answers to the questions are not intended to be commentaries on the Gospels in their entirety but merely represent the answers to the questions that arose for the student at the time. Seventeen Questions on Matthew is similarly in the question-and-answer genre and is most likely by Augustine, but it includes some paragraphs at the end that are certainly not his. For all those who are interested in the greatest classics of Christian antiquity, Augustine's works are indispensable. The present translation of The Lord's Sermon on the Mount was made from the Latin text published in Nuova Biblioteca Agostiniana X/2, 82 285; it is preceded by a detailed introduction by Salvino Caruana (in Italian) on pp. 7 69. Almut Mutzenbecher's critical text of the treatise in Corpus Christianorum, Series Latina 35 was consulted in establishing the text for the Italian series. Mutzenbecher's introduction (in German), although earlier,is a valuable complement to Caruana's. There are several extant English translations, most notably William Findlay, Our Lord's Sermon on the Mount, revised and edited by Philip Schaff in A Select Library of the Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers of the Christian Church, First Series 6 (New York 1903; repr. 1979) 1 63; John J. Jepson, St. Augustine, The Lord's Sermon on the Mount (Westminster, Md. 1948) = Ancient Christian Writers 5; Denis J. Kavanagh, Commentary on the Lord's Sermon on the Mount, with Seventeen Related Sermons (New York 1951) = Fathers of the Church 11, 17 199. The present translation of Agreement among the Evangelists was made from the Latin Text published in Nuova Biblioteca Agostiniana X/1 with an occasional look at S.D.F. Salmond's English translation, The Harmony of the Gospels, edited by Philip Schaff, in A Select Library of Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers of the Christian Church, First Series 6 (New York 1903, repr. 1979) 77 236. The present translation of Questions on the Gospels was made from the Latin text found in the critical edition by Almut Mutzenbecher in CCSL 44/B, with some attention to the text and translation found in NBA 10/2. Aside from two nineteenth-century French translations in two separate editions, each entitled Oeuvres complètes de Saint Augustin (Bar-le-Duc 1864 1873; Paris 1869 1878), and the Italian translation in NBA 10/2, there do not seem to be any translations into modern languages. The present translation of Seventeen Questions on Matthew was made from the Latin text found in the critical edition by Mutzenbecher. The text in NBA was followed in preserving the PL numbering of the questions, while noting the numbering in CCSL. Also included are the concluding paragraphs in the last question that are omitted from the text in CCSL and clearly do not belong to the work. They are, however, included in the NBA text and translation. Aside from the Italian translation in NBA and two nineteenth-century French translations in the editions mentioned previously, there do not seem to be other translations into modern languages.
