A New Translation of the Book of Psalms and of the Proverbs: With Introductions, and Notes, Chiefly Explanatory

A New Translation Of The Book Of Psalms And Of The Proverbs: With Introductions, And Notes, Chiefly Explanatory by George Rapall Noyes is an 1866 English edition consisting of extensive introductory material and verse-by-verse notes on the Psalms and Proverbs. It treats the Psalms as Hebrew lyric poetry—devotional, didactic, lament, and liturgical—and outlines their genre, structure (the five-book arrangement), and the question of authorship, including Davidic predominance and other attributions, with attention to inscriptions and acrostic passages, musical cues, and liturgical headings. The translator/editor explains his method, retains the divine name Jehovah, and consults modern scholars, noting many captions are conjectural. The volume emphasizes reading Psalms and Proverbs in historical context: temple worship, exile and return, and the Psalter’s influence on Jewish worship and Christian devotion. It also presents a critical, historical?critical approach to interpretation, discussing Messianic readings, cross-references to other biblical books, and the Wisdom tradition in Proverbs (including Agur and Lemuel). The starting portion presents Book I with Psalm 1 and Psalm 2.
