A New Translation & Exposition of the Very Ancient Book of Job: With Notes, Explanatory & Philological

A New Translation & Exposition Of The Very Ancient Book Of Job: With Notes, Explanatory & Philological by John Fry is a scholarly translation and commentary on the Book of Job that situates the text in an ancient Near Eastern context. The work provides extensive notes on theology, language, and background, arguing for a pre-Mosaic, patriarchal understanding of God (Elohim) versus the covenant name Jehovah. It presents Job’s story as a structured theodicy in which divine sovereignty encompasses angels, the Adversary, and a testing of faith within God's overarching plan. Part I centers on Job’s piety, the heavenly council, and the first calamities, setting up a deployment of later speakers and a storm-theophany. Across philology and parallels, Fry illuminates key terms such as Berith (covenant), and the unity of the Godhead across covenants, while guiding the reader toward humility before the end of the Lord. The narrative, its prolegomena, and the interpretive apparatus together advocate a present providence and a Christ-typological reading that prepares for future revelation.
