About This Book: A detailed and readable history of New York's elevated trains from their earliest steam-powered, independently-owned days begining in 1867. The book covers the political turmoil surrounding the lines' construction and maintenance, elevated train technology, engineering challenges, and the financial wheeling-dealing behind it all. Most significantly, the ways in which these trains altered the landscape of the city and the lives of everyday New Yorkers is related.
Book Details: 176 pp; over 100 b&w illustrations. Released jointly by A.S. Barnes and Thomas Yoseloff (UK) in 1978; cloth over hardback boards with dustcover.
