The New-York Reader, Issue 3

The New-York Reader, Issue 3is an early 19th-century juvenile reader compiled for use in schools. It presents a collection of prose and poetry selections designed to improve literacy while guiding young readers toward virtuous conduct. The volume includes moral maxims, excerpts from Scriptures such as Proverbs and Psalms, essays on God and His attributes, parent–child duties, industry, temperance, and civic virtue, as well as dialogues and pieces on education and social responsibility. Its Preface explains that selections are chosen for correctness of diction, purity of style, and moral tendency, with many items drawn from sources used in Ackworth and other schools. This work serves as both a reading primer and a manual for cultivating virtue, piety, perseverance, and benevolent action in youth.
