About this title

Synopsis

A vivid register of power in a defining era. Portraits meet precise civic record. Edgar L. Murlin's The New York Red Book assembles portraits and biographies of governors, state officers and members of the legislature, alongside images of congressmen, judges and mayors, the New Constitution of the State, comprehensive election statistics and population returns, plus a miscellany of general facts of interest. Richly illustrated government officials appear beside succinct biographical entries and institutional data, forming a political biography collection and legislative reference guide that doubles as a state constitution resource, an election statistics book and a population data reference for both study and curiosity. The statistical sections illuminate electoral trends and demographic shifts, making this volume a practical American political reference for researchers and historians; equally, its named portraits and civic details function as a genealogy research tool for family investigators and local historians. Accessible in tone yet precise in detail, the book offers a clear window into nineteenth century politics and the practical workings of municipal and state government during the Gilded Age. Out of print for decades and now republished by Alpha Editions. Restored for today's and future generations. More than a reprint - a collector's item and a cultural treasure. As a contemporary chronicle, this volume captures the networks, personalities and statistics that shaped Gilded Age America; its portraits and official registers serve as primary evidence for researchers and historians, political scientists, archivists and genealogists. Casual readers are drawn to the striking period portraits and everyday detail, while classic-literature collectors and institutional libraries prize its provenance and research value. Meticulous record-keeping and clear organisation make it straightforward to cross-reference names, offices and returns, so scholars can trace party structures, municipal careers and demographic patterns with confidence. Compact, usable and historically resonant, this Alpha Editions edition restores a reference essential to anyone interested in New York state history and the texture of nineteenth-century public life.
