New York Times World of New York: An Uncommon Guide to the City of Fantastics

Essays describe unusual aspects of the city, including the lives of local literary figures, nightlife, museums, music, food, and special places.

This is not just another guide to New York City, as the subtitle says. Compiled by two eminent New York Times writers, this is the type of guidebook that for the most part will not be out of date by the time it is published. Each section's contributor is a writer of note, as diverse as Nora Ephron and Bernard Kalb, and including such Times stalwarts as Craig Claiborne and John Russell. Art, music, books, food, walks, nightlife, even the "outerboroughs" are given in-depth coverage. A delight for jaded New Yorkers as well as for out-of-towners. Highly recommended. Paula M. Zieselman, Sarah Lawrence Coll. Lib., Bronxville, N.Y.
