Add to basketN.d., circa 1880s. Dating is based on the non-existence of the spires to St. Patricks, which were added in 1888. No publisher given. This was issued Compliments of Stewart Bros., "the sole Agents for the Famous King of Missouri Cigars." No publisher -- we assume this concertina might have been given out as a freebie by other retailers. Stewart Bros. should be distinguished from A. T. Stewart, which was an early New York department store. Given the content, we would guess this was printed in New York, which then, as now, was a center of publishing, but there is nothing to prove that that is the case, and there were New York guides published and printed elsewhere. Oblong concertina, 73 by 114 mm, when closed, with 12 panels. Views include a bird's eye overview of lower Manhattan, the Statue of Liberty, the Brookllyn Bridge (here not so named), City Hall, Grand Central Terminal (the original building), the High Bridge (now by the Cross Bronx interchange), Grant's Tomb (an earlier structure), the South Ferry terminal, Federal Hall (called the U.S. Sub Treasury then), Columbia College (the earlier, second campus based on Madison Avenue), NYU (from "Washington Park"), the Union League Club (the building prior to its present one), the now razed Hotel Buckingham, the Jefferson Market, the former Beaux Arts Post Office building, the Normal College (now Hunter), the Bethesda Fountain (not here so named), St. Patricks prior to the addition of its spires, the now long gone Vanderbilt mansions between 51st and 52nd Street and Trinity Church. Condition: moderate wear overall. Small hole on first photo edge (overview of city). Back of this, which is blank, has a river of abrasion running from this hole. Cloth spine. Paper pastedown on boards. Leporello.

The shipping cost provided automatically by ABE assumes that the item is the size of an average hardcover book. Since our stock is comprised largely of material which is bigger and heavier, we will often need to request additional shipping charges as a result. We pride ourselves on always packing safely, with the actual materials and method of packing depending on the item(s), where it is going, and with whom we are shipping. We most frequently use the post office, but on some high value items, or upon request, we may use alternatively UPS or FedEx. With the postal service, to domestic destinations with lower value items and the automatically furnished ABE shipping quote, we will usually use Media Mail; on higher value items we are partial to Priority or Express Mail. We will always seek to comply with a customer's wishes if they are communicated to us. When we seek additional shipping charges, we pass along those charges at our cost -- we do not add for handling or materials generally.
