News from Somewhere: A Reader in Communication and Challenges to Globalization

This interdisciplinary collection of articles, each followed by questions for critical reflection, advances debate over the impact of globalization on the current social world across geographic, political, ideological, cultural, and economic boundaries. Twenty-two authors from nine countries explore globalization in contexts of• power and powerlessness;• acquiescence and resistance;• environmental politics;• public education and the branding of knowledge;• civil rights and protections; and• privacy rights and state surveillance. This book will serve concerned citizens, students, activists, and researchers in communications, international relations, and post-colonial studies.

"An outstanding volume that tells the big story of transnational capitalist hegemony through the lens of smaller stories -- localised and cultural-specific contexts that speak to the everyday lived experience of ideological oppression and resistance. The result is a rich tapestry of powerful and accessible insights, and a book that is as intellectually adventurous as it is essential for students, activists, teachers and researchers alike."

"In these times of neoliberal despair we need engaged scholars and artists to question the status quo with clarity, insight, and out of a concern for the rights of all the world's citizens. The contributors to this book more than deliver on all those fronts."

"An excellent collection at the cutting edge of debates over politics, ideology, control and media. Highlights include journalism, the secret state, Anonymous, and the ignominy of casual work conditions. The authors have built an impressive body of work around the notion that understanding power is vital to understanding the world in which we live - but one largely ignored for twisted reasons of deference to authority."

"From critical approaches to media education, through the politics of identity, onto industry studies and propaganda, News From Somewhere is a splendid volume. The contributors set the thoughts racing while challenging our notions on everything from practices of interpretation to the hegemony of neo-liberalism. Broudy, Klaehn and Winter have provided us with a conscientious series of interventions. The contents are set to be devoured by students and researchers."
