Nibsy's Christmas (Classic Reprint)

A stark, moving portrait of Christmas in New York’s tenements.

Through the eyes of a newsboy and the crowded streets, this edition reveals how poverty, hope, and charity collide on a single holiday night.

This nonfiction collection uses vivid scenes to illuminate life in the city’s poorest neighborhoods. It traces the glow of a holiday, the hard edges of daily struggle, and the quiet acts of mercy that reach across the gaps of wealth and want.

• Gritty, ground-level portraits of East Side tenements, alleyways, and the social world around Christmas.
• Characters facing hardship—from newsboys to families and workers—without shying from hard truths.
• Moments of tenderness and charity that offer a counterpoint to deprivation.
• Historical context for urban poverty, housing, and the daily grind in a changing New York.

Ideal for readers of social history and urban life, especially those curious about how Christmas is experienced in the margins.

Jacob August Riis (May 3, 1849 - May 26, 1914), a Danish-American muckraker journalist, photographer, and social reformer, was born in Ribe, Denmark. He is known for his dedication to using his photographic and journalistic talents to help the less fortunate in New York City, which was the subject of most of his prolific writings and photographic essays. He helped with the implementation of "model tenements" in New York with the help of humanitarian Lawrence Veiller. As one of the first photographers to use flash, he is considered a pioneer in photography.
