Nigredo: A Course in Modern Alchemy - Book One

Nigredo is the first stage in a journey of inner alchemy - a path not paved with ancient secrets, but forged through the raw contradictions of modern life. This is not a book about arcane rituals or esoteric doctrines. It is a field guide for those who feel something stirring beneath the surface of their daily experience - a restlessness, a question, a sense that what passes for normal is not enough. It begins not with certainty, but with doubt. Not with light, but with darkness.

Blending poetic narrative with Buddhist insight, sacred psychology, and symbolic myth, Nigredo offers readers a companion through the initial stage of spiritual transformation. It speaks directly to those who have tasted success yet found it hollow, who have sought meaning through systems and identities only to discover themselves more lost than before. Through this alchemical lens, confusion becomes not an error, but a necessary gate; disillusionment, not a failure, but a spark.

Structured across four movements - Mythos, Dharma, Object, and Subject - the book guides readers through layers of unravelling and rediscovery. Each section explores a distinct facet of transformation: the narratives we inherit and inhabit, the moral frameworks that guide or constrict us, the relationship to objects and external goals, and finally, the shifting terrain of the self.

Rather than offering answers, Nigredo poses deeper questions - the kind we often silence in order to carry on. What if your discomfort is not a flaw, but a calling? What if what you are looking for has always been quietly waiting beneath the surface? In evocative, meditative prose, the book traces the slow undoing of illusions: the gradual collapse of conditioned reactivity, the subtle awakening to presence, and the bittersweet clarity that arises when one truly begins to see.

Equal parts memoir and study guide, Nigredo invites readers into an introspective landscape that is both intimate and universal. It draws from the author's lived experience - in medicine, in spiritual training, and in the aftermath of burnout - weaving those threads into a tapestry that resonates with seekers, sceptics, and anyone navigating the quiet ache for something real. This is a book for those who have read widely and found themselves unchanged. For those who long for a wisdom that dissolves suffering, not by solving it, but by revealing its nature.

With minimal dogma and maximum honesty, Nigredo opens a space in which transformation can be glimpsed not as a destination, but as a deepening of attention. For those ready to begin again - with fewer answers and greater sincerity - this is where the work begins.

Simon Robinson has spent a lifetime navigating the space between reason and the unknown. Trained in medicine at the University of Manchester (1994), he built a career spanning anaesthesia, general practice, and medical hypnosis, earning fellowships from the Royal College of Anaesthetists (London, 2003) and the Australian College of General Practitioners (Brisbane, 2011). Yet beneath the structure of professional success, a deeper restlessness stirred -one that no title, career path, or certainty could settle. That restlessness first lay dormant, tempered by the demands of training and the constant movement through hospitals in Manchester, Cambridge, Chester, Torquay, Crewe, Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, and Rockhampton. But when the time came to finally settle, the weight of certainty felt heavier than uncertainty ever had. Depression followed-a rupture that didn't break him, but instead, set him in motion again. The search for something beyond the boundaries of conventional truth became the only path forward. Now based in Scarborough, UK, Robinson writes with a simple intention: to share the wisdom that dissolves suffering. His work is not about offering answers, but about lighting the way for those who, like him, have searched for something more.Beyond his personal journey, Simon is a founding and active member of the Wordbotherers-a vibrant collective of authors and poets nestled in rural North Yorkshire. Through this platform, he regularly shares his writings, offering readers a diverse tapestry of stories and reflections.
