Add to basketNILE NOTES OF A HOWADJI BY GEORGE WILLIAM CURTIS 1977 EX-LIBRARY BUT VERY CLEAN. I traveled and worked in some of the lands along the Nile in Sudan and have heard the term Howadji which supposedly means traveling merchant. I got the idea somewhere along the line that its use was equivalent to the term carpetbagger of the post-Civil War Americas. This small hard cover book may hold the answer. The book measures 5 ¼ x 7 ½ inches and has 362 pages and was published by Harper & Brothers of New York dated 1877, a reprint of the 1856 First Edition. The boards are rather intricately blind-stamped in contrast to the simple but elegant gilt titles on the spine. I had hoped for a series of engraved illustrations but alas, I only found one figure, on the last page of the text. Condition: This book is in remarkably very good condition, especially considering it is ex-library. There is a shelf number on the spine and the usual library markings including an empty card pocket on the rear endpaper. The very detailed blind-stamped hard covers are clean and bright and so too, the gilt titles on the spine. Inside, the book is unmarked except of the library (The Ames Free Library of Easton, Mass) bookplate on the front endpaper and other marking typical of a library. The interior pages are clean and bright throughout the book, without toning or foxing. Both hinges are intact and the binding is tight, sound and square. Language: ENG.
