"Nine French Poets 1820-1880" is a comprehensive anthology and critical study of the most influential voices in nineteenth-century French verse. Compiled by H. E. Berthon, this work explores the evolution of poetic expression during a transformative era, spanning the Romantic, Parnassian, and early Symbolist movements. The collection features a curated selection of masterpieces from nine seminal poets, including Lamartine, Vigny, Hugo, Musset, Sainte-Beuve, Gautier, Leconte de Lisle, Baudelaire, and Banville.

Each section provides deep insight into the stylistic innovations and thematic preoccupations that defined French poetry between 1820 and 1880. By examining the shift from the emotional intensity of Romanticism to the formal precision of "l'art pour l'art," this volume serves as an essential resource for students of European literature and lovers of lyric poetry alike. The work provides a scholarly look at how these poets shaped the linguistic and cultural landscape of France, making it a foundational text for understanding the development of modern literary traditions. Readers will find a rich tapestry of verses that reflect the political upheaval, philosophical inquiry, and artistic brilliance of a century that redefined the limits of the poetic form.
