For centuries, science appeared organized through a relatively stable order of disciplines: physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics, medicine, psychology, economics, sociology, history, and their neighboring fields. These divisions were never perfect, but they made knowledge legible. They allowed science to be taught, funded, governed, communicated, and extended.
That inherited map is no longer enough.
New sciences, subfields, hybrid domains, applied programs, methodological overlays, institutional categories, and scientific names now multiply faster than the whole landscape can absorb them. Some are necessary. Some are premature. Some are redundant. Some stand alone when they should be integrated into broader sciences. Some sciences that should exist remain missing because no existing field has reason to name the absence.
The result is not that science has failed. The result is that the scientific landscape has become harder to read.
Noemics: The Science of Evolving Understanding proposes a new discipline for that problem. Noemics studies how sciences emerge, multiply, overlap, fragment, merge, disappear, and reorganize within the larger architecture of understanding. Its object is not any one science, but the changing order of the sciences themselves.
The book asks a central question: who organizes science?
Its answer is Noemics: a science of orientation that maps, classifies, integrates, separates, retires, and anticipates sciences so that knowledge can continue to grow without becoming unintelligible.
Written in a minimalist and architectural style, Noemics develops the need for a Noemic Atlas, Noemic Map, Noemic Table, Noemic Cycle, and Noemic Register—conceptual instruments for preserving scientific continuity through change. It examines the multiplication of sciences, the business of scientific naming, overlay sciences, missing sciences, redundant sciences, and the future of scientific self-organization.
This is not a textbook about individual sciences, nor a technical treatise in philosophy, sociology, policy, or scientometrics. It is a book about the scientific landscape as a whole.
Noemics is for readers interested in the future of science, the organization of knowledge, systems thinking, philosophy of science, interdisciplinarity, research strategy, and the architecture of human understanding.
